What does it take to follow Jesus?

Following Jesus is both easy and difficult. Jesus himself says:

28“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

-Matthew 11:28-30

Yet he also says:

"I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

-Matthew 19:24

So how can I follow Jesus?

Want to follow Jesus but don't know where to start? Or maybe you have already started following Jesus but you want to know what that looks like practically in your life?

We believe that following Jesus is the best decision a person will ever make in their life and it should be received with a great deal of joy and happiness.  So if you have decided to follow Jesus and want to tell someone, please tell us so we may rejoice with you!  If you are still on the fence about following Christ, we would like to tell you more about what it looks like to follow him.

Before committing yourself wholly to Jesus we want you to be aware of the implications of such a decision in your life. We don't want you to be ignorant of what it will cost to follow Jesus, because He doesn't want you to be ignorant of what it costs to follow him. Don't be fooled by those who tell you that following Jesus is a way to be famous, rich, healthy or otherwise materially successful. It's not what Jesus taught and it's just not true.

The Bible says:

23 And he (Jesus) said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

Luke 9:23-25

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

-Luke 9:57-62

So why follow a man when the cost is so high?

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

-John 8:31-32
